Emily Dickinson – Because I could not stop for Death

Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For his civility.

We passed the school where children played,
Their lessons scarcely done;
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.

We paused before a house that seemed
A swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The cornice but a mound.

Since then ‘t is centuries; but each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses’ heads
Were toward eternity.

The poems and the pics are really great. Why don’t you post some of your own poems here too? I can see that you like poems and something tells me that you write too. I’d like to see yours too. I’m really curious.

    • CaRteR says:

It would presumptuous, to say the least, for someone to be posting the world’s best poetry and then to slip their own poems in as well.

  5. We never stop but it stops us in all ways and manner.

Emily writes from her experiences. This one however amazes me,the content is great for someone whose works were known posthumously.

  8. If you ever want to see a reader’s feedback 🙂 , I rate this post for 4/5. Decent info, but I have to go to that damn yahoo to find the missed parts. Thanks, anyway!

  9. jepokpoetry says:

Great choice of poetry. akary is probably right go ahead and publish some of your own. Doesn’t have to be great, just convey feeling, emotion, or you, etc. you may want to do that on another blog site though if you want to keep the theme of this site the same.

My deeepst appreciation to Robert and to all of you for the extraordinary experience that was the April PAD Challenge. Your creativity, your comments, and your company has elevated my own writing experience to a new level. I am very grateful to each of you for your generosity in allowing me to be a small part of this GREAT (in every sense of that word) adventure. May your own writing journeys take you exactly where you need to go, and may we continue to read one another’s work along the way.Blessings, AutumnCome (what) MayA poet will returnto her quiet cornerher solitary existenceher singular museto figure it outon her ownbut she will feel less afraidless alonefor now, when she listensshe can hear the humof a thousand murmuring wordswhissssssssssssperingwrite write write write writewrite write write write writeand she willfor she’ll knowthat all of youare out therewriting still(the words "write" should diminish in size in the first line and increase in the second, font-wise; maybe between now and November, I’ll figure out how to do that here!)

  28. shayne wallace says:

    Psychotic wife murdering poem.

    Wild and young.

    At first it was fun
    wild and young
    and the days go by
    the arguments begun
    first the shouting
    next the doubting
    third the hitting
    and then the counting
    days got longer
    as the hitting got stronger
    blood started to leak
    she started to weep
    I’m opposed a threat
    to people around
    to them I upset
    they cry on the ground
    she annoys me more
when she gives people them looks
    so when we get home
    there’s a recipe to cook
    I cut her up
    season her with herbs
    cook her good
and feed her to the birds.

Nice poetry. Lots of people live life like there is death doesn’t exist and done lots of bad deeds but death is the biggest reality of life.

  34. In July, 1887, a credit card applicatoin was heard in the Clermont Warden’s Court for the reef claim 200 yards west of Hurley’s Dam, as well as the
‘Telegram’ states:. Scores of reefs are now lying idle in
Queensland from where tremendous yields were obtained near the
surface, but which have been abandoned for want of capital.
Much maudlin sentimentally, and much empty declaration, have
been written and discussed crime, and against the punishment of criminals with death.
